The Studio
Most people buy glasses in a few minutes and then wear them for two years. We think that is the wrong way round, and the way we work in the shops follows from it.
A short list, chosen on purpose
We keep to spectacles and sunglasses. Over 700 are live on the site at any time, from Ray-Ban, Gucci, Carrera, Vogue Eyewear, Coach, Polaroid, Mont Blanc, Oakley, Burberry, Levi’s, Bvlgari, Marc Jacobs, Emporio Armani, Calvin Klein, Police, Puma, Opium, Idee and Seventh Street.
A tighter range means we know what is on the shelf — how a particular acetate sits on a wide bridge, which temples take an adjustment kindly, which frames suit a strong prescription. That knowledge is the part you cannot photograph.
Fit is the whole job
A frame that suits you and a frame that fits you are two different tests, and both have to pass. In the studio we look at:
- Width. The front should be about as wide as your face. Too narrow and it grips; too wide and it slides.
- The bridge. This carries almost all the weight. On a fixed bridge it either matches your nose or it does not; adjustable pads give us room to work.
- Temple length. The arm should reach the ear and bend down behind it, not before it and not two centimetres past.
- How it sits. Level, with your eyes centred in the lens and a little above the middle, and lashes clear of the lens.
- Your prescription. Power changes what is sensible. A strong prescription wants a smaller, well-centred lens; varifocals want enough depth to hold the reading portion.
Our face shape guide covers the looks-right half of this, and the materials guide explains why one frame adjusts beautifully and another barely moves.
Measuring
Once a frame is chosen, the lenses have to be made for the frame and for you — your pupillary distance, and where your eyes sit in that particular front. Getting that wrong is how people end up with new glasses that give them a headache. We measure it in the shop, and we are glad to do it for a prescription you have brought from elsewhere. See the prescription guide if you would like to know what the numbers on your sheet mean.
Eye testing
Eye testing is done in store. Tell us when you ring that you want a test as well as frames, and we will keep enough time for both.
Adjusting, and re-adjusting
New glasses are adjusted before you leave. They will still need it again — frames are pushed up onto heads, slept in, and dropped. Bring them back and we will straighten them. That is covered in Repairs & Adjustments.
Come and try them on
The website is honest about what a frame is, but it cannot tell you how it feels on your nose after ten minutes. All three studios are on Find a Studio, and Book a Fitting explains how to arrange a visit.
