Repairs & Adjustments

Glasses are worn every day, pushed up onto heads, sat on and dropped. They go crooked, they loosen, and sometimes they break. Bring them into any of our studios and we will look at them.

We would rather see a frame than guess at it over the phone, so there is no diagnosis by telephone here — but there is an honest description of what can usually be put right and what usually cannot.

Adjustments

Most complaints about a pair of glasses are complaints about the fit, and the fit is fixable. Come in if:

  • they slide down your nose;
  • they sit crooked, or one lens is higher than the other;
  • they grip at the temples, or leave marks behind your ears;
  • they touch your cheeks or your eyelashes;
  • they have simply stopped feeling like they did when they were new.

Straightening the frame, resetting the temples, changing the angle, and replacing perished nose pads are counter jobs, usually done while you wait. Adjusting a frame you bought from us is not charged for, for as long as you wear it.

Servicing

Bring a pair in now and then even when nothing is wrong. Screws work loose long before a temple falls off, pads harden and lose their grip, and a frame that has been gently bending for months is easier to correct than one left for two years. A proper clean gets at the film that builds up in the hinges and around the rims, which a cloth never reaches.

Repairs

Some repairs are straightforward: a lost screw, a lens that has popped out of an acetate rim, a replacement nylon cord on a semi-rimless frame, a new pair of pads or temple tips.

Others depend on the frame. A broken hinge, a snapped front, a stripped screw thread or a failed rimless mounting may need a part from the manufacturer, which is not always available, and on some frames the repair is not worth doing — a soldered metal joint marks the plating, and a badly cracked acetate front will break again at the same point. We will tell you when something is not worth repairing rather than take your money for it. Anything that needs parts or lens work is quoted before we start.

Lenses

A lens that has fallen out of its rim can usually go back in. A chipped or cracked lens has to be remade, and a scratched lens cannot be polished out — the coating and the surface are gone, and the only real answer is a new lens. If we are remaking lenses we need a current prescription; the prescription guide explains what we are looking at, and eye testing is done in store if yours is out of date.

Frames you did not buy from us

Bring them in anyway. We will look at any frame and tell you honestly whether we can help, though we cannot promise to get parts for a brand we do not stock.

Please do not try these at home

  • Superglue. It rarely holds, it crazes acetate, and it makes a proper repair impossible afterwards. This is the single most common way a repairable frame becomes an unrepairable one.
  • Hot water on acetate. Too much heat and the frame distorts permanently.
  • The wrong screwdriver. Spectacle screws are small and soft, and a stripped head means drilling out.
  • Bending metal temples by eye. Metal work-hardens and snaps at the point you keep bending.

When it is time to replace instead

If your prescription is more than a year old, the plating has worn through, or the same joint has broken twice, the sensible money goes on a new frame rather than a third repair. We will say so. Have a look at Eyeglasses and Sunglasses, and see Book a Fitting.
