Maui Jim sunglasses in India
Maui Jim sunglasses in India cost roughly ₹13,000 to ₹29,000 at the brand's own published prices. Maui Jim is a lens company that happens to make frames. Every pair is polarised as standard, which is unusual, and the lens is what you are paying for.

A short history
Maui Jim began in 1980 as sunglasses sold off a beach in Lahaina, on Maui. The fisherman selling them was the original Maui Jim, and the problem he was solving was specific: Hawaiian light is fierce and bounces off water, so a plain dark lens left you squinting at a flat, grey version of a bright place. A boat captain bought the company in 1991 and it reached the American mainland in 1994. Kering Eyewear bought Maui Jim in October 2022, and the head office is now in Peoria, Illinois.
That origin still explains the product. The brand started with a glare problem, built a lens for it, then built frames to hold it. Which is why there is no unpolarised Maui Jim.
Maui Jim sunglasses price in India
The Maui Jim sunglasses price in India runs from about ₹13,000 to about ₹29,000 on the brand's own India site, GST included. Most of the range sits between ₹17,000 and ₹22,000. What moves a pair up that scale is almost entirely the lens, not the frame.
| Band | What sits here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| ₹13,000–₹15,000 | The rimless and lightweight sport frames, and the simpler moulded shapes. | Lighter lens materials and a frame with less to it. This is the entry to the brand, not a lesser lens — the polarisation is the same. |
| ₹16,000–₹22,000 | The bulk of the range. Everyday shapes in acetate and metal. | Where most buyers land. Usually MauiPure or MauiBrilliant lenses in a fuller frame. |
| ₹23,000–₹29,000 | Glass lenses, titanium frames, and the larger one-piece shield shapes. | SuperThin Glass costs more to make and more to fit. Titanium costs more than metal alloy. |
Two things to know before you compare prices online. If you searched maui jim sunglasses india and landed on the brand's own site, you found prices and no way to buy — every button there says "find a retailer". And imported marketplace listings often run two to three times the Indian price for the same model, because they ship from abroad with duty on top. The brand's published India price is the honest benchmark.
Maui Jim lenses explained
Every Maui Jim lens is a PolarizedPlus2 lens. The brand's claim for it has four parts: it removes 99.9% of glare, blocks 100% of UV, filters high-energy visible light, and lifts colour rather than flattening it. Anti-reflective, scratch-resistant and water-repellent treatments are included rather than sold as extras.
Polarised, and then some
An ordinary polarised lens cuts the glare bouncing off water, glass and wet road. It filters light travelling in one direction, and the side effect is that everything gets duller. PolarizedPlus2 does that and then treats colour separately, so reds and greens come back rather than washing out. The difference shows most in the conditions India has plenty of: hard midday sun, haze, and light off water or a windscreen.
One thing to be clear about — there is no cheaper non-polarised Maui Jim. Some retailers list "UV protection" and "polarised" as two different options on this brand. Every pair is both.
Which Maui Jim lens material?
This is the decision that changes what you actually get, and almost nobody explains it. The six materials differ in clarity, weight, and how well they survive being dropped.
| Lens material | What it is | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| SuperThin Glass | Real glass, 32% thinner and lighter than ordinary glass. The sharpest view Maui Jim makes, and the hardest to scratch. It is also the heaviest option, and glass can break if you drop it on a hard floor. | You want the best optics available, you are hard on lenses, and you do not mind the weight. |
| MauiBrilliant | Near-glass clarity at roughly half the weight of glass. | You want glass-like sharpness in a frame you forget you are wearing. |
| MauiPure | The brand's most popular and most versatile lens. Close to glass clarity, light, and resistant to impact. Like any lightweight lens, it marks more easily than glass, so the case matters. | You are not sure. This is the sensible default and it fits the widest range of frames. |
| MauiPure LT | A thinner version for frames built around low weight and flex. Not available with prescription. | You want the lightest possible rimless frame and do not need power. |
| Maui Ultra | Impact-resistant and very light, built for hard outdoor use. Available with a photochromic treatment that adapts to changing light. | You play sport, or you need one pair that copes with sun and shade. |
| Maui Next | A light everyday lens with reliable impact resistance, made from up to 99% bio-based material. | Weight and materials matter to you more than absolute sharpness. |
Which Maui Jim lens colour?
Lens colour is not decoration. It decides how much light reaches your eye and which colours get lifted, and it is the easiest thing to get wrong. Maui Jim sells fourteen in India; these are the ones that matter in Indian light.
| Lens colour | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral Grey | The base lens. The highest light reduction, with colour and contrast kept rich rather than dulled. | Hard, direct sun. The safe choice for daytime driving in an Indian summer. |
| HCL Bronze | A warm, high-contrast tint that works across a wide range of light. The usual recommendation for a first pair. | Mixed and changeable light. The brand recommends it for fishing and cycling. |
| Maui Rose | A subtle rose tint that reduces eye strain and sharpens contrast. | Fast-moving sport, and a popular choice for driving. |
| Maui HT | A high-transmission lens that lets more light through than the others. | Shade, haze, overcast monsoon days, and driving at dusk. |
| Blue Hawaii | A vibrant blue mirror with strong colour enhancement and crisp optics. | Very bright conditions, water and beach. |
| Maui Green | A green mirror coating that cuts eye strain in extreme brightness. | The brightest conditions you are likely to meet. |
| HT Photochromic | A high-transmission lens that darkens and clears as the light changes. | One pair for a day that starts in shade and ends in sun. |
Mirror and gradient finishes sit on top of these. A bi-gradient lens is mirrored top and bottom with a clear band through the middle, which suits driving: the road ahead stays bright while the sky and the bonnet are cut down.
One honest warning. These tints are dark, and the common complaint from Indian wearers is that they are hard to use once the light drops. If you drive at dusk or through the monsoon, choose Maui HT or the photochromic version rather than Neutral Grey.
How to choose Maui Jim sunglasses
Work in this order: pick the lens colour for the light you are actually in, pick the lens material for the weight and sharpness you want, then pick a frame that fits. Fit decides whether you wear them, and it is what most people get wrong buying sunglasses online.
Size and fit
Look inside the arm for three numbers, something like 64–17–130 — lens width, bridge width and arm length, in millimetres. Take a pair you already wear comfortably, read its numbers, and stay within a millimetre or two. Maui Jim also labels frames XS, standard and XL, so a model you like may come in a size that suits you better.
On shape, wraps and shields are large and curved, which suits a wider face and overwhelms a narrow one. If your face is round or soft, the squarer rectangles add the definition it lacks. Our face shape guide covers this properly.
Asian Fit — worth knowing about
Maui Jim makes an Asian Fit version of several frames, and almost nobody selling the brand in India mentions it. It is built for a lower nose bridge: the nose pads sit higher and the frame is angled so the lens does not rest on your cheek. If sunglasses usually slide down your nose, or mark your cheeks when you smile, ask for it. It is a fit difference, not a style one.
Maui Jim sunglasses with power
Maui Jim says 95% of its sunglasses can be made with prescription lenses, single vision or progressive, polarised exactly like the plain versions. The exception in the lens range is MauiPure LT, which is not made with power. Strongly curved wraps have limits too, because a strong curve and a strong power do not combine easily. Bring your prescription to any of our studios and we will tell you what a frame can take — our prescription guide explains the numbers on your sheet.
MJ Sport sunglasses and the rimless range
MJ Sport sunglasses are Maui Jim's rimless and semi-rimless sport frames — the marking is engraved on the arm of models such as the Ho'okipa, Sandy Beach, Kapalua and Wailea. They are not a separate brand, and they are among the lightest sunglasses the company makes.
The rimless build is the point. With no rim around the lens there is less to catch wind, less weight on the nose, and nothing in the lower field of view, which is why these turn up on boats, bikes and golf courses. The trade-off is that a rimless lens is drilled and mounted rather than held, so it needs more care than a full-rim frame.
If you are buying for a sport, the lens colour matters more than the frame name: HCL Bronze for fishing and cycling, Maui Rose for fast-moving sport, Neutral Grey for driving in hard sun.
Why Maui Jim sunglasses are expensive
Maui Jim sunglasses are expensive because the lens is the product. Polarisation, 100% UV blocking, colour tuning, anti-reflective, scratch-resistant and water-repellent coatings are all standard rather than paid extras, and the glass option is genuine thinned glass. There is no cheaper version of the lens to step down to.
It is the most-asked question about this brand, and the answer is unglamorous. With a fashion label, much of the price is the name on the arm and the lens is often a plain tint. With Maui Jim the proportions are reversed, and you can see it in the price list: the gap between the cheapest and dearest pair is about ₹16,000, narrow for a premium brand, because there is no decoration to charge for.
| What you care about | Maui Jim | The alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Polarisation | On every pair, with no cheaper unpolarised option. | Usually an upgrade or a specific sub-range you have to look for. |
| Lens choice | Six materials and fourteen colours, including real glass. | Typically one or two lens materials per model. |
| What the money buys | Mostly the lens and its coatings. | At a fashion house, mostly the design and the name. |
| Range of shapes | Narrower. Built around sun and water rather than fashion. | Wider, and refreshed with the seasons. |
For the fashion end of the same price bracket, look at Gucci sunglasses or Mont Blanc sunglasses. For a sports lens built around contrast rather than glare, Oakley sunglasses are the closer comparison. For classic shapes at a lower price, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and for polarised lenses on a budget, Polaroid.
What comes with an original Maui Jim pair
Every Maui Jim pair carries two model codes, not one. A lens-letter code such as B798-03S sits alongside an MJ code such as MJ0798S, both printed inside the arm. The box includes a case and a cleaning cloth, and the lens itself carries the brand's mark.
The two-code system is the useful part, because the first letter of the older code tells you the lens. B is Blue Hawaii, H is HCL Bronze, R is Maui Rose, HT is Maui HT, and no letter means Neutral Grey. So B798-03S is a Blue Hawaii lens on frame 798. Retailers add the eye size on the end, which is where a number like 64 comes from.
What to look for
- Inside the arm: both codes — the lens-letter code and the MJ code — with the colour number and the size.
- The lens: hold it against a phone screen and rotate it. A polarised lens darkens sharply at about ninety degrees.
- The warranty: two years against defects in materials and workmanship, honoured only on pairs bought from an authorised retailer. Scratches, accidental breakage and ordinary wear are not covered. ⚠️ Ask any seller to confirm they are authorised.
- Repairs happen in India. Maui Jim runs its own company in Chennai with a repair facility, on repair.in@mauijim.com, and nose pads and temples are free while parts last. Frame and lens damage goes there rather than to a local counter.
- In the box: a protective case and a cleaning cloth.
- Looking after them: the brand's own rule is "on your face or in the case". Rinse in lukewarm water, and keep alcohol-based cleaners off the coatings.

Maui Jim sunglasses FAQs
What is the Maui Jim sunglasses price in India?
Maui Jim's published India prices run from about ₹13,000 to ₹29,000, GST included, with most of the range between ₹17,000 and ₹22,000. The lens drives it: glass lenses and titanium frames sit at the top, lightweight rimless sport frames at the bottom. Imported marketplace listings often cost two to three times more.
Why are Maui Jim sunglasses so expensive?
Because the lens is the product rather than an afterthought. Polarisation, 100% UV blocking, colour enhancement and the anti-reflective, scratch-resistant and water-repellent coatings are standard on every pair, not paid upgrades. The glass option is genuinely thinned optical glass. There is no cheaper lens to step down to.
Are Maui Jim sunglasses polarized?
Yes, all of them. Every lens uses PolarizedPlus2, which removes glare, blocks 100% of UV, filters high-energy visible light and lifts colour instead of flattening it. There is no unpolarised version. If a listing offers a choice between "UV protection" and "polarised" on this brand, that listing is wrong.
Which Maui Jim lens colour should I choose?
Neutral Grey for hard, direct sun and daytime driving. HCL Bronze for mixed light, fishing and cycling. Maui Rose for fast sport and for reducing eye strain. Maui HT for shade, haze and driving at dusk. Blue Hawaii and the mirror finishes for very bright conditions, water and beach.
What is the difference between SuperThin Glass, MauiPure and MauiBrilliant?
SuperThin Glass is real glass, 32% thinner than ordinary glass, with the sharpest view and the best scratch resistance. MauiBrilliant gives near-glass clarity at about half the weight. MauiPure is the most popular and most versatile — close to glass clarity, lighter, and more impact-resistant. MauiPure is the sensible default.
Is Maui Jim better than Ray-Ban?
They are built for different things. Every Maui Jim is polarised, with six lens materials to choose from including glass, so it wins if the lens matters most to you. Ray-Ban has more classic shapes, a wider range and lower prices, with polarisation an option on some models rather than standard.
Is Maui Jim a luxury brand, and who owns it?
Maui Jim is a premium sunglasses brand rather than a fashion house. It was founded in Hawaii in 1980 and is owned by Kering Eyewear, which completed its purchase in October 2022. Kering holds the eyewear licences for several luxury labels, but Maui Jim is run as a performance lens brand.
What are MJ Sport sunglasses?
MJ Sport is the marking on Maui Jim's rimless and semi-rimless sport frames, such as the Ho'okipa, Sandy Beach, Kapalua and Wailea. It is not a separate brand. They are among the lightest frames the company makes, with no rim in the lower field of view, which is why they suit fishing, cycling and golf.
Are mojim sunglasses and maujin sunglasses the same as Maui Jim?
Yes. Mojim sunglasses and maujin sunglasses are common misspellings, and Google treats them as the same search as maui jim sunglasses india. The name comes from Maui, the Hawaiian island where the brand started, and the original Maui Jim was a real person selling sunglasses on the beach. It is not a Japanese brand.
Can Maui Jim sunglasses be made with power?
Most frames take prescription lenses, single vision or progressive, polarised in exactly the same way. MauiPure LT is the exception and is not made with power. Heavily curved wraps have limits too, because a strong curve and a strong prescription do not combine easily. Bring your prescription in and we will check the frame.
What is the Maui Jim warranty in India, and is it a lifetime warranty?
It is not a lifetime warranty. Maui Jim covers its sunglasses for two years from purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, and honours that only on pairs bought from an authorised retailer. Nose pads and temples are free while parts last. Repairs go to the brand's own Chennai facility. Scratches and accidental breakage are not covered.
